About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin trained in piano performance at Furman University and earned his master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. A accomplished concert pianist who has performed solo recitals and appeared as a featured artist with orchestras across the United States and Mexico, he won the Nina Plant Wideman Competition and performed with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra. His career shifted toward church music and composer work, and his compositions now reach audiences in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to hundreds of worship services throughout North America.
Martin's prolific output as a composer and arranger demonstrates remarkable range across genres and settings. His music appears regularly in sacred contexts, concert halls, and performance venues nationwide. Based in Austin, Texas, he continues to write and arrange while maintaining an active performance schedule centered on church music and conferences for musicians.
Why we love this
Martin and his collaborator have crafted a work that balances intellectual scope with emotional power, giving your choir a piece that genuinely transforms the worship experience. The dynamic instrumental writing lifts the choral writing into something theatrical without sacrificing the sacred text, and singers respond with visible investment to music that demands and rewards their full engagement.
What to expect
Majestic and affirming, this composition unfolds with the architectural grandeur of a tone poem while maintaining an emotional directness that connects immediately with listeners. The writing combines moments of intimate reflection with surges of jubilant declaration, creating a sense of spiritual uplift that feels earned rather than imposed.
Who it's for
Choirs seeking repertoire with genuine substance and a powerful spiritual message will find this work engaging for both rehearsal and performance. The piece works well for choirs of intermediate to advanced vocal ability who want sacred music that avoids predictability while remaining accessible to diverse congregations.
How to get the most out of it
- Build the dynamic arc gradually across the work rather than frontloading intensity; this sacred tone poem gains power through architectural development, not just volume.
- Balance the choir's voice against the instrumental accompaniment so the text remains clear; Martin's instrumentation can quickly overpower without careful mixing.
- Give singers time to absorb the lyrical passages between sections of higher energy so the work breathes as a unified statement.
How to use it
Position this as a centerpiece in a sacred concert or worship service where it can anchor the program with its scope and message. It pairs effectively with shorter, more intimate choral works, allowing the instrumental pak to provide textural variety and instrumental color to an otherwise a cappella program.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining phrase lines across longer harmonic progressions
- Balancing vocal blend when singing against full instrumental accompaniment
- Interpreting dynamic shape within a large-scale formal structure
- Connecting text meaning to musical gesture and phrasing
