About the Composer: Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin holds degrees in music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Bachelor) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas (Master in composition). His catalog spans over two hundred anthems and seven choral musicals, born largely from his work as Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he actively shapes the church's worship life.

Choplin's versatility extends across performance contexts and musical idioms. He has worked as both a church musician and theme park entertainer, commanding everything from rock to classical to bluegrass. His recordings include the self-produced Pepper Is My Real Name (featuring humorous songs) and Hold On (a solo album of his inspirational work). Throughout the country, he conducts, clinches, and performs as composer and entertainer, moving audiences with what he describes as his aim: "creating music that will lead people to worship in a dramatic way."

Why we love this

Choplin understands the emotional architecture of congregational worship. This anthem carries the weight of genuine spiritual conviction without becoming ponderous, finding room for both vulnerability and affirmation in a piece that works for volunteer choirs and developing singers alike.

What to expect

There's an intimate quality here, a sense of trust and gentle assurance. The harmonic language feels accessible yet sincere, never saccharine. Singers will find the text settling into their musical instincts naturally, making this the kind of anthem that lingers in memory long after rehearsal ends.

Who it's for

SSA choirs in churches and Christian educational settings. The piece suits volunteer ensembles with varying experience levels while offering enough musical substance to keep singers engaged. It works equally well for youth choirs building confidence and adult choirs seeking meaningful sacred literature.

How to get the most out of it

  • Build the harmonic tension gradually through the middle section so the return to the opening feels like a genuine answer rather than mere repetition.
  • Shape each phrase with attention to the text's meaning; resist the urge to keep a uniform dynamic throughout.
  • Allow space for breath between phrases so the message lands clearly and singers maintain healthy air support.

How to use it

Program this for services that emphasize spiritual guidance and reassurance. It pairs well with responsive readings on faith or calls for trust, and works effectively as an opening anthem when you want to establish an introspective, devotional tone for the service. The nine-page score makes it substantial enough for a feature position but not so demanding that it requires extensive preparation time.
