About the Composer: Mark Williams

Mark Williams shaped generations of young musicians through his prolific output of band and orchestra repertoire. A Chicago native who spent his career in Washington state, he authored the Accent on Achievement Band Method alongside composing over 200 works for school ensembles. His clinical influence extended across 34 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia, where he guest conducted and mentored music programs at every level.
Williams held degrees from Eastern Washington University and maintained active performance schedules on bassoon while serving as conductor and artistic director of the Spokane British Brass Band. His dual focus on composition and woodwind performance informed his writing for beginning bands. His contributions to school music earned recognition including the Western International Band Clinic's Gralia Competition and multiple ASCAP Special Awards.
Why we love this
Williams understands what captures a first-year band's attention and sustains it through an entire piece. The concept here is pure gold: young percussionists get their moment in the spotlight while the rest of the band maintains momentum, and the theatrical staging turns what could be a novelty into genuine entertainment. The optional guest performer twist makes this a natural ice-breaker for school assemblies or community concerts.
What to expect
Part variety show, part musical romp. The piece opens with straightforward percussion spotlights that feel like a marching band parade, then shifts into a playful, accelerating scramble that builds comedy through repetition and momentum. Players and listeners alike feel the humor in the simplicity.
Who it's for
Beginning concert bands with solid foundational technique who are ready to perform with purpose and personality. This works especially well for programs introducing first-year students to public performance or for schools seeking an accessible opener that engages both audience and ensemble.
How to get the most out of it
- Seat percussionists in a prominent location where the audience has clear sightlines to each player's solo moments. The staging matters as much as the music.
- Work with your percussionists beforehand on the comedic timing of each entrance. Brief pauses and clear, confident strikes will land better than rushed entries.
- If using building staff or administrators as guest soloists, rehearse their entrances separately so they can focus on one clean hit while your regular percussionists coach from the side.
- Keep the tempo steady during the first section so the audience can follow each featured instrument clearly, then build the energy deliberately into the accelerating section.
How to use it
Use this as a concert opener to set a lighthearted tone and energize the audience immediately. It also serves as an excellent closing piece for pops concerts or family matinee programs. The short duration and flexibility of the guest performer option make it ideal for school assemblies or informal indoor concerts where traditional full-band programming feels too formal.
Skills your students will build
- Playing with confidence in a featured role
- Maintaining ensemble pulse while featuring individual sections
- Responding to tempo changes and rhythmic acceleration
- Following conductor cues in structured, theatrical contexts
