About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and pursued dual studies in English and French at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her path to music education began unexpectedly when she organized children's choruses while still an undergraduate, an experience that prompted her to return to school for music certification and earn a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Donnelly spent three decades teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, where she and George Strid began collaborating in 1985 on a sixth-grade musical project. That initial partnership evolved into an prolific songwriting career spanning over two hundred compositions and twenty-five musicals. She remains active in ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP.

Why we love this

Donnelly and Strid craft holiday arrangements that feel contemporary without abandoning the genuine warmth that makes seasonal repertoire resonate with audiences. The SSA voicing opens this piece to a wide range of singers, from middle school choirs building confidence to community ensembles seeking accessible material with real harmonic substance.

What to expect

Bright and unpretentious. This is a piece that celebrates the season with genuine cheerfulness rather than over-sweetness, landing somewhere between a concert arrangement and a celebration that invites audiences into its energy.

Who it's for

SSA choirs at the middle school, high school, and community levels will find this accessible without feeling thin. Singers who thrive on contemporary holiday repertoire with personality beyond traditional carol arrangements belong here.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody line carefully across sections so the text lands clearly; holiday repertoire lives or dies by lyrical clarity.
  • Lean into the rhythmic vitality that Donnelly and Strid bring to their arrangements rather than dragging into sentimentality.
  • Rehearse the harmonic parts independently first if your singers are newer to chromatic movement or jazz-influenced voicings.

How to use it

Pair this with one traditional carol and one secular holiday song to build a mixed holiday set that shows range and appeal. It works equally well as a concert closer or as part of a larger holiday production where you want contemporary style to sit alongside classics.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in SSA voicing with clear part independence
  • Sustaining blend and intonation across contemporary harmonic movement
  • Interpreting rhythmic precision in modern choral writing
  • Building confidence in holiday performance repertoire
  • Articulating text with clarity in ensemble contexts
