About the Composer: Douglas E. Wagner

Douglas E. Wagner studied composition and music education at Butler University, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees. After three decades teaching and administering high school music programs, he transitioned to full-time composition, a shift that has made him one of the most prolific creators in American music education.
Since 1973, Wagner has published over 3,500 compositions across virtually every school and church ensemble type: concert band, orchestra, choir, handbell ensemble, piano, organ, and voice. His works have circulated in more than seventeen million copies worldwide, reaching performance stages, broadcast studios, and rehearsal rooms across the United States and internationally. He lives in Indianapolis with his wife, Sandy.
Why we love this
Wagner balances Grade 2 accessibility with genuine musicality, delivering a piece that doesn't feel compromised by its level. The soaring melody and harmonic richness give your band something to sink their teeth into without overwhelming younger or less experienced players, making this an ideal choice when you want a concert vehicle that sounds mature and feels rewarding to perform.
What to expect
Expansive and emotionally engaging, this piece unfolds like a carefully composed journey. Rich harmonies support a melody that naturally soars, while counter-melodies add textural interest without cluttering the soundscape, creating a performance that feels both polished and genuinely moving.
Who it's for
This work belongs in the library of any band director programming a Grade 2 concert or festival performance. It serves advancing young players who are ready for pieces with sophisticated harmonic language and sustained lyrical content, and it works equally well for older students in a new or developmental program seeking expressive material.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the soaring theme with dynamic contrast, allowing the melody to breathe during passages marked for restraint and building intensity during the counter-melody sections.
- Balance the lush harmonies by ensuring accompaniment voices don't obscure the primary melodic line; use sectional rehearsals to clarify inner voices before running the full score.
- Approach the transitions between sections with attention to tempo consistency; even slight rushes will undermine the ballad-like character.
How to use it
Feature this as a concert centerpiece when you want to showcase your band's musicality and emotional maturity. It pairs well on a program with energetic marches or rhythmically driven selections, providing contrast while proving that Grade 2 repertoire can deliver sophisticated musical substance.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining lyrical lines with consistent tone and phrasing
- Reading and balancing harmonic textures with inner voice awareness
- Responding to counter-melodic elements and maintaining ensemble blend when melodic material is distributed across sections
- Interpreting dynamic subtlety and shaping musical phrases over extended passages
