About the Arranger: June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery earned her degree from Florida State University and has spent more than two decades teaching private piano students while also directing elementary music programs. Her work in K-6 classrooms earned her recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and led to active membership in Delta Kappa Gamma.

Beyond the studio, Montgomery has established herself as a prolific composer and clinician. She has written extensively for Alfred Publishing Company and developed several foundational series, including FUNdamental Musicianship Skills and the Piano Camp books. Her collaborations with Maurice Hinson (Meet the Great Composers) and Martha Mier (Musical Concepts) have shaped music education curricula nationwide. Montgomery remains deeply involved in sacred music, serving as a pianist and children's choir director in the Presbyterian Church and as carillonneur at the Stephen Foster Memorial.

Why we love this

Montgomery brings authentic classroom experience to this arrangement, understanding exactly what young pianists need to play a hymn with both accessibility and musical integrity. The piece respects the original tune while making it genuinely playable at the elementary level, avoiding the condescending simplifications that strip songs of their character.

What to expect

Warmth and sincerity define this arrangement. The melody feels intimate and accessible, supported by straightforward but never banal accompaniment that honors the spiritual character of the hymn without overcomplicating the student's task.

Who it's for

Elementary pianists preparing for church services, recitals, or sacred music programs will find this arrangement within comfortable reach. It also works well for students exploring hymnody as part of their musical foundation or for church music classes introducing liturgical repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady, unhurried tempo that allows the melody to sing. Elementary pianists often rush hymns; giving yourself permission to move slowly builds confidence and lets the familiar tune breathe naturally.
  • Balance the melody clearly against the accompaniment without forcing dynamics. The right hand should speak, but the left hand supports rather than competes.
  • Practice hands separately through the full four pages to build security before combining them. This builds both technical confidence and musical understanding of how the parts interact.

How to use it

Include this in a sacred music recital program where it can anchor a set of contrasting hymn arrangements or stand alone as an opening piece. It also serves well in church worship settings where young pianists are beginning to lead congregational music.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading four pages of continuous musical material
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment with independent hands
  • Maintaining steady tempo across a longer form
  • Interpreting hymn-based repertoire with appropriate expression
  • Coordinating repeated accompaniment patterns with melodic changes
