About the Composer: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett has shaped several generations of musicians through his dual career in academia and composition. Since 2001, he has taught music theory and composition at the University of Oklahoma, specializing in twentieth-century topics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He also serves as musical arranger for the Pride of Oklahoma marching band, bringing his compositional vision to the field.

Barrett's catalog exceeds two hundred published works for symphonic band, chamber ensembles, and marching band. His compositions have earned performances by the Dallas Wind Symphony, countless All-State and All-Region Honor Bands, and national recognition through broadcasts on NPR and USA Network, as well as presentations at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention and the International Trumpet Guild. A multiple ASCAPlus award recipient, Barrett combines rigorous theoretical training with accessibility in his writing.

Why we love this

Barrett captures genuine heroic momentum without resorting to bombast. The writing sits comfortably for Grade 4 ensembles while maintaining the kind of musical substance that keeps experienced bands engaged, making it equally rewarding for mid-level high school and college programs preparing contest material.

What to expect

Urgent and propulsive, with the salt spray of adventure in every phrase. The music unfolds like a ship cutting through open water, combining rhythmic drive with soaring melodic gestures that evoke both the courage and the grandeur of the clipper ship era.

Who it's for

Grade 4 concert bands seeking high-energy festival repertoire with genuine dramatic arc. This score works equally well for high school bands building contest experience and college ensembles wanting accessible but musically substantive program material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the main melodic material against the harmonic underpinnings; the heroic character emerges through clarity rather than volume alone.
  • Shape the phrasing to reflect the nautical journey Barrett evokes. Phrases should breathe like the rise and fall of ocean swells rather than feeling static or mechanical.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment (if available with your purchase) to lock ensemble rhythmic precision before fine-tuning the musical arc in rehearsal.

How to use it

Place this as an energetic centerpiece or closer on a concert program where you want to end on a note of triumph. Its contest-ready character also makes it ideal for festival competitions where judges reward both technical execution and programmatic storytelling.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustained ensemble rhythmic precision under shifting textural densities
  • Balancing sectional independence with unified dramatic phrasing
  • Reading and executing contrasting dynamic and articulation profiles across the band
  • Managing the technical demands of heroic material while maintaining musicality
