More about this title

About the Composer: Beatrice A. Miller

Beatrice A. Miller

Beatrice A. Miller grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a musically immersive household where her father, a Lutheran pastor and accomplished musician, led the family in hymn singing each evening. Her early exposure to church music became foundational to her artistic identity; family lore recalls that at nine months old, her baby vocalizations mirrored the cadence of hymns the family had just sung, a gift that so delighted her four older brothers that they became willing participants in the singing tradition.

Miller earned her Master's degree in music composition from Northwestern University and spent decades as a piano teacher, church organist, and choir director in Corvallis, Oregon before retiring from full-time teaching in 1979. Her composition career flourished thereafter, beginning with publication in 1987 and earning recognition as Composer of the Year from the Oregon Music Teacher's Association in 1997.

Why we love this

Miller writes for real pianists at real skill levels, and this duo captures that sensibility perfectly. The piece gives both players genuinely musical material rather than relegating one to an accompaniment role, making rehearsals feel collaborative rather than hierarchical. The intermediate level invites intermediate pianists to sound polished and expressive without overwhelming them technically.

What to expect

The title evokes the gentle motion of coastal air: the harmonic language moves in fluid waves, unhurried and contemplative. Expect expressive lyricism that feels accessible from first sight-reading, with moments of textural transparency that let both pianists breathe together.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists working in pairs or studios that regularly feature two-piano repertoire. This piece is ideal for recitals, competitions, and educational performances where students benefit from collaborative playing without tackling advanced virtuosity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two pianos by listening for which voice carries the melody at any given moment; adjust dynamic levels so the primary musical idea always emerges clearly.
  • Establish your own visual cues for entrances and tempo shifts rather than relying entirely on the conductor. This independence between two instruments strengthens ensemble awareness.
  • Shape phrases across both piano parts as if they were voices in a single texture. Think counterpoint, not two separate pieces happening simultaneously.
  • Use the eight pages to rehearse in shorter sections first, mastering one or two pages before connecting larger spans. This builds confidence faster than running through the entire piece.

How to use it

Pair this with other Miller works or contemporary composers working in lyrical styles to create a program segment that showcases ensemble playing. The eight-page length makes it substantial enough to anchor a duo recital but compact enough to program alongside solo pieces from each pianist.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening for balance and blend across two independent keyboard instruments
  • Maintaining tempo and phrase coherence with a collaborative partner
  • Interpreting expressive markings in counterpoint (one part leading while another accompanies)
  • Sight-reading and learning music at intermediate difficulty in collaboration
  • Independent part reading without score dependence
