About the Arranger: Alice Parker

Alice Parker's career bridged composition, conducting, and pedagogy with a singular focus: unlocking the expressive power of melody in choral music. Her studies at Smith College and Juilliard deepened when she began collaborating with Robert Shaw, a partnership that produced hundreds of settings of American folksongs, hymns, and spirituals now performed by choruses globally. Over five decades, she published more than five hundred works across operas, cantatas, song cycles, and anthems.

Parker founded MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC. in 1985 to center her work on the melody itself, publishing books on melodic styles, choral improvisation, and church music practice. Her honors include the Robert Shaw Award from the American Choral Directors Association, the Harvard Glee Club Foundation Medal, and six honorary doctorates. She served as the first Director Laureate of Chorus America and held recognition as Distinguished Composer of the Year 2000 by the American Guild of Organists.
