More about this title

About the Composer: Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin

Pepper Choplin studied composition at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth after earning his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His catalog now includes over two hundred anthems alongside seven choral musicals, drawn from his varied work as a church musician, clinician, conductor, and entertainer across rock, classical, and bluegrass idioms.

As Minister of Music at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, Choplin channels much of his creative output into designing vibrant worship experiences. His recordings, including the solo album Hold On, showcase his gift for inspirational writing that moves audiences to both laughter and reflection. His fundamental aim remains constant: crafting music that deepens people's capacity for worship.

Why we love this

Choplin's setting of this beloved hymn respects the text's spiritual weight while bringing fresh harmonic color and structural shape to an arrangement that refuses to feel stale. The piece works equally well in a traditional liturgical setting or as a concert anchor, giving you programming flexibility without sacrificing musical substance.

What to expect

Choplin's treatment opens up the hymn's spiritual architecture while maintaining the contemplative quality the text demands. The setting unfolds with both reverence and musical substance, offering singers the chance to inhabit this prayer with genuine depth.

Who it's for

This octavo suits any SATB choir, whether in a church service or concert program. It demands solid fundamental voicing skills but requires no virtuosic technique, making it accessible to high school and college choirs as well as experienced community ensembles.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the SATB voices so text clarity remains paramount; Choplin's harmonies serve the words, not the reverse
  • Shape longer phrases with attention to the harmonic rhythm rather than following melodic contour alone
  • Let the piece breathe at phrase boundaries instead of pushing through to the next section

How to use it

Include this as a centerpiece in a sacred choral concert or a meaningful addition to a worship service that benefits from congregational familiarity paired with polished choir execution. It also pairs naturally with other hymn settings or works on texts of faith and assurance.

Skills your students will build

  • SATB voice independence and blend
  • Text interpretation in sacred music
  • Harmonic listening and intonation in four-part writing
  • Phrasing based on harmonic movement
