About the Arranger: Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina

Jill Gallina stands among the most performed composers of choral music and musical theater for young singers, with her work recognized by the Parents Choice Foundation, American Library Service, and ASCAP. Her compositions span elementary through high school ensembles and have appeared on The Disney Channel, PBS, The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and stages at The New York Philharmonic and Boston Pops. Before dedicating herself to composition full time, she taught elementary music, giving her deep insight into what resonates with developing singers and growing musicians.

Working collaboratively with her husband Michael, Jill has created music performed thousands of times annually across the English-speaking world. The pair received their B.A. degrees in music from the College of New Jersey and hold the Stanley Austin Alumni Award for their sustained contributions to composition. Through their music and educator workshops, they continue to engage, enlighten, and inspire young people everywhere.

Why we love this

Gallina understands the sweet spot where musical content meets developmental readiness. A 2-part arrangement from her hand means you get writing that sounds purposeful and polished without exceeding what your singers can actually execute, and the five pages give your ensemble something substantial to sink their teeth into without becoming a semester-long commitment.

What to expect

The piece carries warmth and accessibility without sacrificing musicality. Two-part writing here lets each section shine without getting lost, creating the kind of satisfying choral sound that builds ensemble confidence.

Who it's for

Middle school and early high school choirs looking for repertoire with genuine musical substance. This arrangement works equally well for concert programs, festival submissions, or seasonal performances when you need something your singers will feel proud to present.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two parts by having singers physically separate during rehearsal; once they can hear their own line distinctly, blend becomes intentional rather than accidental.
  • Check intonation at dynamic peaks, since younger singers often drift sharp under the excitement of fuller volume.
  • Establish clear phrasing before adding any interpretive ideas; a 2-part piece relies on line quality to carry its effect.

How to use it

Slot this into your concert's middle section, where it can stand alone or pair with other secular choral works of similar difficulty. It's lightweight enough to not overwhelm an already full rehearsal schedule, yet gives singers meaningful artistic work.

Skills your students will build

  • Part independence in a 2-part texture
  • Sustaining long phrases with proper breath placement
  • Blend and balance between two equal voices
  • Stylistic interpretation in secular choral music
