About the Arranger: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and developed deep expertise in choral accompaniment during her time at North Texas State University. This foundation shaped a prolific career as a composer and arranger for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice. She has received multiple ASCAP Plus Awards and studied under Dove Award winner Mark Hayes in 2002 and 2004.
Courtney has built an impressive catalog of over 350 published titles since reaching her first 100 in 2009. She maintains an active life as a church musician, composition instructor, and piano tutor while based in Columbia, Tennessee.
Why we love this
Courtney's arrangement captures the brightness and rhythmic energy of this French carol without requiring a large instrumental ensemble to land the effect. The optional instrumentation (harpsichord, hand drum, triangle, and flutes) gives you flexibility to scale up for a full holiday concert or keep it chamber-sized for a more intimate service or program segment. It's the kind of arrangement that lets your SATB singers shine while sounding fully realized either way.
What to expect
Noel Nouvelet has the buoyancy and decorative elegance of Renaissance music, with enough rhythmic vitality to feel modern and engaging. The carol moves with purpose and joy, inviting the listener into a familiar season through a fresh musical lens.
Who it's for
This octavo works well for choirs of mixed ability and experience. The SATB voicing is straightforward enough for developing ensembles but offers enough character to reward stronger choirs looking for a distinctive holiday program opener or closer.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the percussion parts carefully if you use hand drum and triangle; they should color the texture rather than dominate it. The free online parts help you rehearse these layers separately before integrating them with the choir.
- Shape the melodic phrases with gentle dynamics to highlight the carol's folk character. Avoid heavy, operatic articulation; this style asks for clarity and lightness.
- If adding the optional flutes, have them double or complement the soprano line to reinforce the tune without muddying the SATB balance.
How to use it
Program this as a palate cleanser in a holiday concert program; its lighter character and shorter length work beautifully between heavier carols or alongside contemporary seasonal music. It's also ideal for a mixed-season church service or concert when you want to honor a multicultural, non-dominant tradition without extensive musical preparation.
Skills your students will build
- Singing with Renaissance articulation and style
- Balancing SATB parts in a homophonic texture
- Coordinate with optional instrumental colors (if using flutes, hand drum, triangle, or harpsichord)
- Clear diction in French text
