About the Composer: Joel Spineti

Joel Spineti brings seventeen years of classroom experience across elementary, middle, and high school levels to his work as a composer and educator. He currently directs the jazz and concert bands at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School in Connecticut, where he applies the musical range he developed through formal study at Central Connecticut State University (where he focused on composition) and subsequent jazz piano training in New York with Hal Galper.
Spineti's compositional voice reflects his diverse background in concert band, jazz ensemble, choral, and musical theater writing. Over twelve years, he performed in and directed musical theater productions across forty states, an experience that infuses his concert band works with theatrical flair and accessibility. He lives in southern Connecticut with his family and their Scottish terrier, Baxter.
Why we love this
Spineti crafts an immediately engaging piece that requires minimal rehearsal time while delivering genuine musical substance. The reggae idiom introduces students to a non-traditional popular music style without demanding advanced technical facility, making it an excellent bridge between classical concert repertoire and world music awareness.
What to expect
A warm Caribbean breeze captured in sound. The piece evokes effortless joy and seaside relaxation, its simple six-note foundation and buoyant rhythm giving listeners the sensation of swaying gently in the sun. Despite its simplicity, there's genuine musicianship in the interplay between rhythm and melody, creating a work that feels both carefree and intentionally crafted.
Who it's for
Beginning and intermediate concert bands seeking accessible, high-engagement repertoire that programs well for younger and mixed-age ensembles. This piece works equally well for directors introducing students to non-Western musical traditions or looking for a confidence-building selection that combines musical authenticity with minimal technical demands.
How to get the most out of it
- Lock the rhythm section into the 'one drop' groove early in rehearsal; this groove serves as the foundation for all ensemble parts, so securing it first makes the rest of the arrangement fall into place quickly.
- Shape the eighth note upbeats with deliberate articulation so they cut through cleanly and propel the melody forward rather than disappearing into the texture.
- Encourage the melodic voices to phrase the catchy melody with lift and personality; the casual, beach-day warmth of the piece comes through in how relaxed and confident the main line sounds.
- Balance the accompaniment voices so they support rather than overpower the melody, keeping the arrangement's airy, breezy quality intact.
How to use it
Program this as a concert opener to set an upbeat, welcoming tone, or place it strategically mid-program to refresh audience energy and provide performers with a moment of pure enjoyment. It pairs well alongside other light concert selections or serves as an effective bridge when transitioning from a heavier, more formal work to something more contemporary in style.
