About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged over 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals that are performed by singers across the globe. His educational materials include Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique. Beck holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University, and his work as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator has taken him throughout the United States and beyond.

Beyond his publishing leadership, Beck is an accomplished tenor who performs with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and has been an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992. He regularly directs musical theatre and has served as a commissioned composer and guest conductor for honor choirs and all-state ensembles across the Southeast. His commitment to arts education and choral artistry shapes every publication he curates.

Why we love this

This musical gives elementary choirs a complete theatrical package that feels genuinely professional without demanding elaborate staging or technical wizardry. Beck and Fisher's score captures the warmth of classic nanny stories while keeping the vocal writing accessible for young singers, and the included SoundTrax CD means you have polished accompaniment from day one. For a 45-minute production that teaches ensemble discipline, character work, and the joy of singing together, this delivers real theatrical satisfaction.

What to expect

Warm, theatrical, and festive, this score channels the spirit of beloved holiday classics with humor and heart. The music moves between energetic ensemble numbers that build excitement and gentler moments that let the North Pole magic settle in, creating a performance that feels both polished and joyful.

Who it's for

This musical works beautifully for grades 3 and up, whether your choir is a full mixed ensemble or divided by voice part. It engages singers who thrive on theatrical storytelling and gives reluctant singers a concrete role to play, making it ideal for schools building choral confidence in younger students.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the dialogue carefully during rehearsals so the script lands with clarity; young singers sometimes rush spoken sections, which undermines the comedic timing.
  • Use the SoundTrax CD during sectional rehearsals to help singers internalize their parts independently, then gradually reduce reliance on it as confidence builds.
  • Encourage singers to track character motivations throughout the show; even small chorus members benefit from understanding how their scenes connect to Nanny Claus's larger journey.
  • Staging Notes are included; review them early and map out traffic patterns during the first full run-through to prevent crowding and build confidence.

How to use it

Schedule this as your winter concert centerpiece or holiday assembly feature; the 45-minute runtime is perfect for a complete show without requiring a second piece. It also works well as a spring performance if your concert calendar allows, since the themes of family time and togetherness transcend strict seasonality.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining character and focus while singing in an ensemble
  • Balancing sung melody with spoken dialogue
  • Responding to theatrical cues and following stage directions
  • Learning to coordinate with a recorded accompaniment
  • Building confidence in ensemble performance through a complete theatrical narrative
