About the Composer: Michael Oare
Michael Oare brings three decades of classroom experience to his compositional voice. After earning degrees in composition and music education from Old Dominion University, he spent 33 years as Director of Bands at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia, where his ensembles earned superior ratings on the Virginia Concert Band Performance Assessment for 32 consecutive years. His work has been selected for inclusion in GIA Publications' respected "Teaching Music Through Performance" series.
Beyond the classroom, Oare serves as conductor of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia Concert Band and maintains an active performance schedule with the Virginia Wind Symphony. He holds membership in ASCAP and Phi Beta Mu, has earned the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence twice, and was named Chesapeake Public Schools' Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2016. His compositions for young musicians balance musical substance with pedagogical purpose.
