About the Arranger: Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw

Kirby Shaw's influence on choral music extends across six continents, where he has led workshops and masterclasses in over 45 states and a dozen countries. Trained at San Jose State University (Music Education and Choral Composition) and the University of Washington (DMA in Choral Conducting), Shaw brings both rigorous craft and infectious energy to everything he touches. His career includes founding and directing acclaimed vocal jazz ensembles at College of the Siskiyous, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, among other institutions.

As a prolific composer and arranger with over 2,500 works in print and nearly 20 million copies sold worldwide, Shaw has built a catalog sung globally by choirs at every level. His credentials include direct mentorship from jazz vocalists like Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, and Jon Hendricks; recordings that span hundreds of educational projects, five college albums, and two solo releases; and numerous ASCAP awards recognizing his creative output. He currently directs the Jefferson State Choral Coalition at Southern Oregon University and performs with Just 4 Kicks, a four-part a cappella jazz ensemble.

Why we love this

Shaw's jazz arrangements have earned trust because they balance accessibility with authentic swing vocabulary. This SAB voicing opens the standard to ensembles without extensive jazz experience, while the harmonic language and rhythmic sophistication keep skilled singers engaged. Directors consistently return to his work because students light up singing it, and the arrangement sits comfortably on voices across three parts.

What to expect

Warm, sophisticated, and unrushed. The arrangement draws you into a particular moment, a small room where someone is singing straight from the heart. There is swing here, but it breathes naturally, never forced.

Who it's for

Mixed choirs at the intermediate level seeking a genuine jazz standard that doesn't require a jazz specialist to teach. This works equally well for high school ensembles, community choruses, and college non-majors who want to explore the genre with confidence.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the swing feel early in rehearsal by asking singers to listen to a recorded version before opening their music; the rhythmic pocket matters more than note-perfect execution.
  • Mark the phrase arcs in rehearsal: these standards live in their legit, singing quality, not in overly bounced articulation.
  • Shape the dynamics to support the story of the lyric rather than defaulting to terraced levels; small moves create intimacy.

How to use it

Pair this with spirituals or art songs to show how jazz and classical traditions both value beautiful, sustained singing. It also works as a single feature on a pop/jazz concert, or nested in a set of standards to demonstrate range across American song repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and singing jazz voicings (seventh chords, extensions)
  • Understanding swing rhythm and feel separate from notation
  • Balancing blend and individual line awareness in three-part harmony
  • Interpreting rubato and expressive phrasing in a jazz context
  • Building ensemble cohesion across disparate voice ranges
