About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes piano music designed to deepen students' musical understanding while keeping them genuinely engaged. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, having studied piano with Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich, music education with Mary Hoffman, and jazz with Tony Caramia.

Beyond her private piano teaching studio, Bober brings two decades of public school music experience and university-level instruction. She serves as an active church pianist and has directed church music programs. Her reputation as both a clinician and composer has made her a frequent presenter at piano teacher conventions and workshops throughout North America.

Why we love this

This piece strikes the rare balance between genuine musicality and pure enjoyment. The playful subject matter combined with dynamic variety and clever use of touch creates a performance that sounds polished without demanding technical heroics, making it an ideal showcase for late elementary students who need confidence-building wins.

What to expect

Cheerful and spirited, like watching a dog bound around a yard in pure joy. The music bounces with energy while remaining playful rather than frantic, capturing those moments of delightful mischief that make dogs such appealing subjects for music.

Who it's for

Late elementary pianists ready to move beyond basic technique and explore expressive playing. This is ideal for students who respond well to programmatic music and benefit from the extra motivation that comes with a fun, relatable story.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody with careful attention to dynamics. The contrasts between soft and energetic passages will bring Rusty's personality to life.
  • Explore different touch qualities as the piece transitions between sections. Staccato passages should bounce with lightness while legato moments sing.
  • Balance accompaniment texture so the playful melody always takes center stage. Think of yourself as a storyteller introducing the audience to Rusty.

How to use it

Program this as a recital highlight that appeals equally to families and other students. Its upbeat character makes it excellent for spring or end-of-year events where you want performances that entertain and celebrate the joy of playing.
