Morton Manus

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing as president from 1952 through 2016, transforming it from a sheet music company into a comprehensive music education publisher. A clarinetist and pianist himself, he recognized the gap between performance repertoire and instructional materials, and under his vision, Alfred developed foundational methods for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder that shaped how millions learned music. His leadership extended the company globally, establishing offices across Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK, while also acquiring major catalogs including Warner Bros. Publications and the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

Manus inherited Alfred Music from his father Sam, who had founded the original Manus Music in 1922 during Tin Pan Alley's peak and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930. By the 1950s, Morty's business degree from City College of New York informed a strategic pivot toward education. His sons Ron and Steve joined the company in subsequent decades, continuing to expand both the instructional and performance catalogs that Alfred remains known for today.
