About the Author: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance from Kent State University and pursued graduate study in music education at the same institution. His work as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio anchors his deep engagement with both liturgical and educational music.

Moore has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger with over 500 published works across sacred, secular, educational, and popular choral repertoire, along with organ and piano compositions and eight educational resources. His pieces regularly appear at state and national music contests and conventions. The American Choral Directors Association recognized him among 400 composers of historical significance in American choral music, and he has received the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times.

Why we love this

Scrambles transforms those precious minutes between activities or when you're waiting for a substitute to arrive into genuine music reading practice. Students solve puzzles by reassembling scattered measures of recognizable melodies, which keeps engagement high while reinforcing interval reading, phrase recognition, and melodic construction.

What to expect

Solving these puzzles feels like being a musical detective. Students hear the melody in their minds and physically reconstruct it, making the connection between what they know and what they read tangible and satisfying.

Who it's for

General music teachers, classroom music educators, and music specialists working with students across grade levels who need flexible, ready-to-use materials for skill-building and assessment. This resource works equally well for whole-class instruction, substitute lesson plans, or individual reinforcement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Display puzzles on your smart board to work through as a group, allowing students to call out where measures should go and explain their reasoning based on melodic shape or intervallic patterns.
  • Use individual printed copies as formative assessment tools to identify which students struggle with melodic continuity or phrase structure.
  • Tackle the bonus questions after students solve the main puzzle to deepen their understanding of the music they've just reassembled.

How to use it

Fill transition time between rehearsals or lessons with these puzzles, or use them as scaffolded reading practice during units focused on melodic literacy. The reproducible format and included PDF files make them ideal for distance learning or blended classroom models.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing melodic contour and phrase structure
  • Reading and ordering measures in sequence
  • Identifying intervals and intervallic patterns
  • Understanding how musical lines connect and flow
  • Analyzing melody construction and logical progression
