About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as an expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently maintains an independent piano teaching studio in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs accomplished students in piano, composition, and the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum.
Her professional credentials include a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a pianist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Barden was among the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan and later served as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Beyond her teaching practice, Barden has established herself as a sought-after clinician, conducting workshops for piano educators at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions published through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected by the National Federation of Music Clubs for its Junior Festival. She also spent four years studying, performing, and teaching throughout Europe.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her B.M. in piano performance from Ohio University (1977), her M.M. in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University (1979), and her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University (1989).
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, where she oversaw the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program; Oklahoma Baptist University; and the University of Oklahoma. She spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she regularly presents at major national conferences including those of the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, among others.
Dr. Kowalchyk has co-authored more than 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, she and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students of all ages. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Throughout his career at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music who established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral students in this field while teaching piano pedagogy courses and directing the group piano program. Additional recognition includes his designation as a Signature Sinfonian by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in 2013 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Murray State University in 2014.
