About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is an internationally respected expert in early childhood music education and co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she works with award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes.
Her musical foundation includes a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a pianist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and became one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Over 17 years with Yamaha as a national staff member, she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Christine is a sought-after clinician who has led workshops for piano teachers at professional conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her publications through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts course and several piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, private piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and an Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent four summers teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently holds an adjunct piano faculty position at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
During his 19 years as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Lancaster established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and guided more than 50 doctoral students through their dissertations. He taught piano pedagogy courses, directed the group piano program, and ran the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program serving pre-college students. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). He received a David Ross Boyd Professorship in 1991, recognizing his exceptional work in teaching, counseling, and student mentorship.
Lancaster's professional leadership includes serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as the 2020 National Conference Chair. He has held leadership roles in the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy and, alongside his wife Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia recognized him as a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University honored him with the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
