About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She is a co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and maintains a private piano teaching studio in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes.
Her educational background includes a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and became one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Over 17 years with Yamaha, she held significant leadership roles including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Christine regularly leads workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in locations such as England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions published through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and numerous solo piano pieces, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and completed her doctoral studies in piano pedagogy at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed preparatory piano initiatives, and taught graduate-level pedagogy courses. In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, with notable titles including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.

E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Lancaster held the position of Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he developed the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral students in this field and taught pre-college piano students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction. Between 1981 and 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma.
Lancaster has contributed significantly to professional music organizations, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. His distinguished career earned him numerous accolades, including the University of Oklahoma's Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and recognition as a Signature Sinfonian by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (2013). Murray State University presented him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award, the institution's highest honor.
