About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is an internationally recognized specialist in early childhood music education and co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she works with numerous award-winning students in piano and composition, while also leading Music for Little Mozarts classes for young learners.
Her musical foundation includes a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Barden spent four years living and working in Europe, studying and performing while building her teaching experience. She was among the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, launching a 17-year tenure as a national staff member with Yamaha. During this time, she held key positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led teacher workshops at professional conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts series and original piano solos, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano educator at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University and completed graduate studies in piano performance and pedagogy at Northwestern University. Her doctoral degree in piano pedagogy came from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed piano preparatory studies, and taught graduate courses in pedagogy. During the early 1980s, she spent summers teaching at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Working alongside her husband Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Kowalchyk has co-authored more than 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. The couple operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
During his 19 years at the University of Oklahoma, Norman (1979 to 1998), Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music where he established the masters and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored over 50 doctoral students in this field and taught piano pedagogy courses while directing the group piano program. He also led the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which combined group and private instruction for pre-college students. From 1981 to 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, ran a thriving independent piano studio in Norman.
Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles with MTNA, including National Chairman of Group Piano, National Chairman of Student Chapters, and 2020 National Conference Chair. He has also served in various capacities with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. His teaching excellence earned him multiple awards from the University of Oklahoma: the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). The David Ross Boyd Professorship came to him in 1991. In recognition of his career contributions, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University presented him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
