About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as an expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano independently in Reno, Nevada. Her students consistently earn prizes in piano and composition competitions, and she regularly instructs Music for Little Mozarts preschool classes.
Barden holds a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and was among the first American educators to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. For 17 years, she served as a national staff member with Yamaha, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has conducted workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, among them "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Club Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator who currently serves on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University (1977), a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University (1979), and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University (1989).
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including those sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy.
With her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, most notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. For fifteen years, she and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, teaching students across all age levels. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music alongside her university teaching responsibilities.

E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Throughout his career at the University of Oklahoma (1979 to 1998), Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music who specialized in piano pedagogy. He founded both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy there in 1980 and supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations in the field. His honors include the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), an Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received a David Ross Boyd Professorship for excellence in teaching and student mentorship. Additionally, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University presented him with the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
