About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano educator and clinician currently on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her B.M. in piano performance from Ohio University, her M.M. in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She served as coordinator of the class piano program and director of the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois, and during the summers of 1979 through 1982, she taught class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at numerous national conferences including those sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, most notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996, teaching students across all age levels. Now based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching position.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster is an accomplished pianist and music educator who served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches as adjunct piano faculty at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy and taught piano pedagogy courses. He mentored over 50 doctoral students as their major professor and directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which blended group and private instruction for pre-college students. During this period, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, also operated a large independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster has earned recognition throughout his career, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). His service to the music education community includes roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Conference Chair for MTNA, as well as leadership positions with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. He received the Signature Sinfonian award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in 2013 and was honored by Murray State University as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2014.
