About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally for her expertise in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, a preschool piano method, and currently teaches piano privately in Reno, Nevada. Her students have won numerous competitions in piano and composition, and she regularly conducts Music for Little Mozarts classes for young learners.
Barden holds a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and became one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. For 17 years, she served as a national staff member with Yamaha, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at major conferences throughout the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum and original piano pieces, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival choice.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator currently serving as an instructor of class piano, piano, and piano pedagogy at California State University, Northridge. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, her master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed preparatory piano offerings, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. Her summers from 1979 to 1982 were devoted to teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As an accomplished clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She and her husband operated a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 through 1996, teaching students across all age levels. Now based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as an instructor and serves as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
During his 19 years at the University of Oklahoma (1979–1998), Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music and pioneered the masters and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He advised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and taught pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction. Alongside his academic work, he and Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991).
Dr. Lancaster has held leadership roles throughout his career, including National Chairman of Group Piano and National Conference Chair for MTNA in 2020. He has served in various capacities with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy and was honored as a Signature Sinfonian by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in 2013.
