About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a leading voice in early childhood music education and co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching studio where she instructs accomplished students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes.
Barden earned her degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years immersed in European musical study, performance, and teaching. As one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, she subsequently spent 17 years on Yamaha's national staff, serving as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
An accomplished clinician, Barden regularly leads workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and multiple piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator currently serving on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano instruction, and piano pedagogy. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at several institutions, including Eastern Illinois University where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program. She has also taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Her summer teaching experience includes work at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan from 1979 to 1982, where she instructed class piano and piano ensemble.
As a prolific clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor of Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
For nearly two decades, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations and directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. From 1981 to 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a substantial independent piano studio in Norman. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), an Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received a David Ross Boyd Professorship, recognizing exceptional achievement in teaching, counseling, and student guidance.
Dr. Lancaster has held leadership positions within the Music Teachers National Association, including National Chairman of Group Piano, National Chairman of Student Chapters, and 2020 National Conference Chair. He also served in administrative roles with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University presented him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award, the institution's highest honor.
