About the Composer: Christine H. Barden

Christine H. Barden

Christine H. Barden brings decades of early childhood music education expertise to the Music for Little Mozarts series as one of its co-authors. A piano performance graduate from San Francisco State University, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and spent four years performing and teaching across Europe. Her training with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan led to a 17-year tenure as a national staff member with Yamaha, where she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.

Barden maintains an independent piano teaching studio in Reno, Nevada, where her students have earned numerous awards in both performance and composition competitions. She is a respected clinician who has led workshops for piano teachers at regional and national conferences, and her teaching philosophy emphasizes playful, developmentally appropriate instruction for young pianists. Her published compositions include several piano solos recognized by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Why we love this

This audio accompaniment transforms practice from a solitary activity into an engaging musical conversation, keeping young pianists motivated and on track between lessons. The recordings honor the pedagogical sequence and musical quality of the Level 4 material, supporting students' developing independence while maintaining the encouragement they need to thrive.

What to expect

The recordings capture the character and charm of each piece in the Level 4 curriculum, from playful and lighthearted selections to more expressive, melodically focused arrangements. Hearing their parts situated within lush, carefully balanced accompaniments gives young pianists a sense of accomplishment and artistic purpose that sheet music alone cannot convey.

Who it's for

This digital audio download is designed for Level 4 students working through Music for Little Mozarts Lesson and Discovery Books, whether studying in a studio, homeschool setting, or independent practice environment. Teachers and parents can use these recordings to support practice sessions and help young pianists hear how their parts fit into the complete musical texture.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen through the entire recording first without playing to familiarize yourself with tempo, style, and phrasing before attempting to play along.
  • Start at a slower tempo if available, then gradually increase speed as coordination improves between your part and the recorded accompaniment.
  • Pay attention to the balance between your melody and the accompaniment; adjust your touch to ensure your right-hand part sings above the supporting voices.
  • Use the audio to reinforce rhythm accuracy and consistent pulse, especially in pieces with syncopation or changing time signatures at this level.

How to use it

Integrate these recordings into the weekly practice routine to reinforce lessons taught in class and deepen student engagement with the curriculum. Parents managing homeschool music instruction will find the audio particularly valuable for demonstrating stylistically appropriate interpretation and maintaining student motivation throughout the level.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening to and playing in ensemble with recorded accompaniment
  • Maintaining steady tempo and pulse alignment with accompaniment
  • Recognizing and responding to different musical textures and voice balance
  • Building confidence in performance through repeated listening and playing
  • Developing interpretation by hearing how melody interacts with harmonic support
