About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands out as a leading voice in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes in Reno, Nevada. Many of her students have won prizes in both piano and composition competitions.
Her credentials span impressive training and international experience. Barden earned a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied with Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and became one of the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan.
Barden spent 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha, serving as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. She is a sought-after clinician who has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, among them "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, her master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program, as well as at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma. She spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a prolific author, she has co-written more than 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996, serving students of all ages. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor of Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches adjunct piano faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
For nearly two decades, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the institution's master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in the field. He taught piano pedagogy courses, oversaw the group piano program, and instructed pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. During 1981 to 1996, he and his wife Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman. His teaching excellence earned him numerous awards, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996).
Dr. Lancaster held significant leadership positions within the Music Teachers National Association, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters before becoming 2020 National Conference Chair. He also contributed to the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy in various administrative roles. In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia recognized him as a Signature Sinfonian for his exemplary representation of the fraternity as an alumnus, and Murray State University honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
