About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized worldwide as an expert in early childhood music education and serves as a co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she instructs award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes.
Her educational foundation includes a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Early in her career, she spent four years studying, performing, and teaching throughout Europe. As one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, she went on to serve as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Barden is an accomplished clinician who regularly leads workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her publications through Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum as well as original piano solos, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a professor of piano at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, private piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her undergraduate degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a prolific clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Dr. Kowalchyk has co-authored more than 300 educational piano publications with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he shaped the field of piano pedagogy through innovative curriculum development. He founded both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy at Oklahoma in 1980 and guided more than 50 doctoral dissertations as Major Professor. His teaching contributions earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996).
Beyond academia, Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles including National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He served in leadership positions with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. With his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, he operated a successful independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. His contributions to music education have been recognized with a Signature Sinfonian award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (2013) and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Murray State University (2014).
