About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as an internationally recognized expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and maintains a private piano teaching studio in Reno, Nevada. Her students regularly win competitions in piano and composition, while she also leads Music for Little Mozarts classes for young learners.
Barden earned her degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, the celebrated pianist of the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four formative years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching the piano. Among the first American teachers invited to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, she went on to serve as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, eventually directing curriculum and serving as National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As an in-demand clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum as well as several piano solos; her piece "Etude Toccata" was selected as a Junior Festival choice by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator currently serving on the faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her degrees from Ohio University (piano performance, 1977), Northwestern University (piano performance and pedagogy, 1979), and Teachers College, Columbia University (Ed.D. in piano pedagogy, 1989).
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program while teaching graduate pedagogy courses. During the early 1980s, she taught summer sessions in class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
Dr. Kowalchyk has established herself as a sought after clinician and adjudicator, presenting at conventions for the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, among others. Together with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has co authored more than 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, they operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music in addition to her university teaching.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster spent nineteen years as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he taught piano pedagogy and oversaw the group piano program. He holds degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Currently, he serves as an adjunct piano faculty member at California State University, Northridge, and formerly held the position of Executive Editor, Piano for Alfred Music.
At the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Lancaster founded both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980, going on to mentor more than fifty doctoral dissertation students in the field. He directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which combined group and private instruction for pre-college students. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received a David Ross Boyd Professorship, recognizing faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, mentoring, and student guidance.
