About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is a leading expert in early childhood music education and co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she works with accomplished students in piano and composition, alongside teaching Music for Little Mozarts classes.
Her professional background is extensive and internationally influenced. Barden earned her degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, studying with Vladimir Brenner, a pianist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe developing her skills through performance and teaching, then became one of the first American educators to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Over 17 years with Yamaha, she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden regularly leads workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts course and numerous piano solos, among them "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Club's Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. Her academic preparation includes a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctoral degree in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed preparatory piano instruction, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses at these institutions. Her publishing work with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, has resulted in over 300 educational piano titles, notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk has led sessions at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She previously taught summer sessions at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, and operated an independent studio in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband from 1981 to 1996. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she serves as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Lancaster held the position of Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertation students and taught piano pedagogy courses while directing the group piano program. His achievements at Oklahoma earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received the David Ross Boyd Professorship, recognizing faculty excellence in teaching and student guidance.
