About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized worldwide as an expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs Music for Little Mozarts classes alongside private students. A San Francisco State University graduate with a degree in piano performance, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a celebrated piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Barden's career reflects deep engagement with diverse musical traditions and methodologies. She spent four years abroad studying, performing, and teaching in Europe, and became one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Her 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha included serving as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Beyond her teaching practice, Barden is an active clinician and composer. She has led workshops at professional conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred feature both the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum and original piano compositions, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece. Her students regularly win competitions in piano and composition.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano lessons, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University in 1977, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University in 1979, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1989.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including those held by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy.
With her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, she and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. Based in the Los Angeles area, she currently serves as a clinician for Alfred Music while continuing her teaching work.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and holds faculty positions as an adjunct piano instructor at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Throughout his academic career, Lancaster spent nearly two decades as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertation students and directed the group piano program while also teaching at the university's Piano Pedagogy Laboratory. His contributions earned him multiple honors, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996).
