About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a recognized expert in early childhood music education and serves as co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she instructs award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes for young learners.
Her professional credentials include a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe developing her skills through study, performance, and teaching. As one of the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, Barden went on to serve as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Barden actively contributes to the music education community through workshops and clinics presented at professional conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum alongside original piano solos; her piece "Etude Toccata" was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival selection.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy at California State University, Northridge. She earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University (1977), a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University (1979), and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University (1989).
Her professional experience spans multiple institutions, including Eastern Illinois University where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program. She has also taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma, and served as a summer instructor in class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan from 1979 to 1982. Dr. Kowalchyk is widely recognized as a clinician and adjudicator, presenting at major conferences including those of the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
As a co-author with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has created more than 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. Based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as both a piano instructor and clinician for Alfred Music, following a 15-year period teaching at their independent studio in Norman, Oklahoma.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Lancaster spent nearly two decades at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he held the rank of Professor of Music from 1979 to 1998. He founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy there in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in the field. His teaching excellence earned him numerous honors, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991). Beyond campus, he and his wife Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster has contributed significantly to the music education profession through leadership roles in MTNA, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano, National Chairman of Student Chapters, and 2020 National Conference Chair.
