About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized worldwide for her expertise in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano in Reno, Nevada, where she maintains a studio of accomplished students alongside leading Music for Little Mozarts classes. A graduate of San Francisco State University with a degree in piano performance, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, the renowned piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Her career has spanned multiple continents and leadership roles. Barden was among the first American educators to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, launching a 17-year tenure with Yamaha that included serving as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. Her students have earned numerous piano and composition awards, and her published compositions include several piano solos such as "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.
As a sought-after clinician, she has led workshops for music teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her four years of study, performance, and teaching in Europe further shaped her distinctive approach to music education.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her undergraduate degree in piano performance from Ohio University, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She previously coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Together with her husband Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
Dr. Kowalchyk is an active clinician and adjudicator who regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster held the rank of Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he developed piano pedagogy curricula and oversaw the group piano program. He founded the university's master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in the field. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). He also received a David Ross Boyd Professorship in 1991, recognizing exceptional achievement in teaching and student mentorship.
Beyond his university work, Dr. Lancaster co-directed a thriving independent piano studio in Norman with his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, from 1981 to 1996.
