About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally for her expertise in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano independently in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs prize-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes. A San Francisco State University graduate with a degree in piano performance, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Barden's career spans multiple continents and educational systems. She spent four years studying, performing, and teaching throughout Europe, and became one of the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. During her 17-year tenure as a national staff member with Yamaha, she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts course and piano solos such as "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association convention, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She previously operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. Based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Throughout his career at the University of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster held the rank of Professor of Music and fundamentally shaped the institution's piano pedagogy offerings. He established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980, subsequently advising more than 50 doctoral candidates in the field. His teaching accolades include the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). He also directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students.
