About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally for her expertise in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes in Reno, Nevada. Her students have won numerous prizes in piano and composition competitions.
Barden holds a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and was among the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Over 17 years with Yamaha, she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions published through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, private piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her undergraduate degree in piano performance from Ohio University, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Her career has spanned multiple institutions, including Eastern Illinois University where she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program. She has also taught at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma. During the early 1980s, she spent summers teaching at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she regularly presents at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
Dr. Kowalchyk is best known for her collaborative work with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster. Together they have authored more than 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She currently serves as a clinician for Alfred Music and resides in the Los Angeles area.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and maintains an adjunct faculty position in piano at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He directed the group piano program, mentored more than 50 doctoral students in pedagogy, and taught pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. His teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). In 1991, he received a David Ross Boyd Professorship in recognition of his exceptional contributions to student development and mentoring.
Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles within the music education profession, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He has also been active in the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. Beyond his academic work, he and his wife Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk operated a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian, and Murray State University honored him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
