About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, a preschool piano method, and currently teaches piano privately in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs Music for Little Mozarts classes alongside her private students in piano and composition.
Her educational background includes a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, the renowned piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She expanded her training by spending four years studying, performing, and teaching throughout Europe and became one of the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. During her 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha, she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Christine has conducted workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States as well as in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions published with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano educator and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and completed her doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed preparatory piano instruction, and taught graduate-level pedagogy courses. Her summers from 1979 to 1982 were spent teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. She has also served as a clinician and adjudicator for major organizations including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, most notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 through 1996, the couple operated a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students across all age levels. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor of Piano for Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and Northwestern University, where he completed his Ph.D.
From 1979 to 1998, Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. He founded the university's master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral students in the field. His teaching excellence earned him multiple honors, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). He directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, where he combined group and private instruction for pre-college students. Between 1981 and 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated an independent piano studio in Norman.
