Description
Music Expressions™, the general music component of Expressions Music Curriculum™, is a literacy-focused music curriculum that includes a wide range of classroom resources for teachers of grades K-8. Each lesson focuses on a particular set of music standards set forth in the National Standards for Arts Education. It provides elementary school students with the curricular foundation needed for secondary-school music disciplines including band, orchestra, chorus, and jazz ensembles. Its spiral structure builds music skills cumulatively from class to class and year to year. Features include embedded assessments, authentic recordings, and diverse content.

The Teacher Curriculum Package includes Teacher Edition Volumes I-III, Teacher Support Pack, and Teacher Resource Guide.

Teacher Edition
Each grade level includes four easy-to-carry volumes. Each volume contains age-appropriate, easy-to-follow lesson plans that motivate students. They deliver musical concepts that incorporate the most up-to-date research on how children learn. Every lesson develops critical thinking skills and music vocabulary, and provides cross-curricular connections, assessments, and additional resources for lesson expansion.

Teacher Support Pack
The components of the Teacher Support Pack greatly enhance the curriculum. It includes reproducible worksheets (23 total), overhead transparencies (6 total), journal pages (14), progress record (MSPR2), 4 rhythm city rap cards (6 sets), 24 "B-b-b-b-bassball" rhythm cards (1 deck), 22 mood cards, and 1 timeline.

More about this title

Why we love this

This curriculum framework solves a real structural challenge in middle school general music: delivering comprehensive literacy instruction that actually prepares students for band, orchestra, and choir rather than leaving them to catch up later. The spiral design means skills build meaningfully across years, and the embedded assessments let you track progress without creating extra work. You get everything from lesson plans to reproducible materials in one package, so you're not hunting through separate resources mid-semester.

Who it's for

Middle school general music teachers instructing grades 7-8 who need a complete, standards-aligned curriculum with ready-to-teach lesson plans and support materials. This package serves teachers building foundational skills in students who may eventually pursue band, orchestra, chorus, or jazz.

How to get the most out of it

  • Start with the reproducible worksheets early in the year to establish baseline understanding of music vocabulary; they're designed to be reusable across multiple classes.
  • Use the rhythm city rap cards and bassball rhythm cards as quick warm-ups rather than waiting for a dedicated unit; repetition across weeks builds automaticity.
  • Reference the progress record (MSPR2) at regular intervals (every 4-6 weeks) to identify which concepts need reteaching before moving forward in the spiral.

How to use it

Use this as your core general music curriculum for grades 7-8, organizing your year around the four easy-to-carry volumes so you can move fluidly between concepts. The cross-curricular connections and diverse content let you integrate music literacy with your school's other academic standards, while the reproducible worksheets and assessments keep your grading manageable and focused on actual skill development.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and writing music notation in treble and bass clefs
  • Understanding rhythm notation and meter
  • Identifying melodic and harmonic concepts
  • Analyzing music across diverse genres and cultures
  • Developing critical listening and thinking skills
  • Applying music vocabulary in written and verbal contexts
  • Preparing foundational skills for secondary ensemble participation
