Description
Music Expressions™, the general music component of Expressions Music Curriculum™, is a literacy-focused music curriculum that includes a wide range of classroom resources for teachers of grades K-8. Each lesson focuses on a particular set of music standards set forth in the National Standards for Arts Education. It provides elementary school students with the curricular foundation needed for secondary-school music disciplines including band, orchestra, chorus, and jazz ensembles. Its spiral structure builds music skills cumulatively from class to class and year to year. Features include embedded assessments, authentic recordings, and diverse content.

The Teacher Curriculum Package includes Teacher Edition Volumes I-III, Teacher Support Pack, and Teacher Resource Guide.

Teacher Edition
Each grade level includes three easy-to-carry volumes. Each volume contains age-appropriate, easy-to-follow lesson plans that motivate students. They deliver musical concepts that incorporate the most up-to-date research on how children learn. Every lesson develops critical thinking skills and music vocabulary, and provides cross-curricular connections, assessments, and additional resources for lesson expansion.

Teacher Support Pack

It includes reproducible worksheets #1-#25 (25 total), transparencies #1-#12 (13 total), journal pages #1-#21 (21 total), progress record (MSPR1), 30 rhythm and meter cards (12 sets), 12 beat-square strips, 20 password game teacher cards, 20 password games student cards (6 sets), 5 song part cards, 13 music career cards (2 sets).

More about this title

Why we love this

This is a comprehensive, standards-aligned curriculum built on research-based pedagogy rather than a disconnected collection of activities. The spiral structure means students genuinely retain and build upon what they learned in Grade 5, creating real musical literacy instead of starting over each year.

What to expect

Organized without being rigid. Students experience music concepts as interconnected rather than isolated topics, and the cross-curricular connections make what they're learning feel relevant to the wider world beyond the music room.

Who it's for

General music teachers in middle school (grades 6-8) who need a complete, structured curriculum that prepares students for elective ensembles. This package works for teachers managing mixed-ability classrooms and those seeking to integrate assessment and cross-curricular connections into daily instruction.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the three-volume structure as your pacing guide for the school year, treating each volume as a self-contained unit with built-in assessment checkpoints so you know exactly where students stand before moving forward.
  • Integrate the reproducible worksheets into your regular rotation rather than saving them for review; they reinforce concepts while they're fresh and give you quick formative data on what stuck.
  • Layer the transparencies into your whole-class instruction to anchor abstract concepts visually, especially when introducing notation or music vocabulary that benefits from repeated exposure across multiple lessons.
  • Reference the journal pages as a window into how individual students process what they're learning; their written reflections often reveal misconceptions that whole-class observation misses.

How to use it

Use this as your core general music curriculum for sixth grade, following the spiral sequence established in earlier grades. The three volumes organize naturally across a school year, and the embedded assessments let you track student progress toward high school ensemble readiness.

Skills your students will build

  • Music literacy across pitch, rhythm, and form
  • Critical thinking through analysis of diverse musical styles
  • Music vocabulary and conceptual understanding aligned to National Standards
  • Cross-curricular connections linking music to history, language arts, and science
  • Self-assessment and peer evaluation skills through embedded formative assessments
