About the Artist: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell's gift for melody has shaped the musical development of countless students. Growing up in North Carolina without a piano at home, he walked to his aunt and uncle's house each day after school to practice, absorbing music with the discipline that later defined his teaching career. When his parents finally purchased a piano a year into his lessons, Hartsell was already composing, crafting pieces inspired by the literature he encountered in English class and writing accompaniments for his high school choir's radio broadcasts.

After earning his degree from East Carolina University, Hartsell returned to classroom teaching and rediscovered composition as a creative outlet. A chance meeting with Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s opened doors to publication, beginning with the influential Something Special series in 1990. Over six decades of work as a composer, teacher, accompanist, and adjudicator, Hartsell has published more than 60 collections and solos. He now lives in Charlotte, where he remains active across multiple musical roles.

Why we love this

Hartsell understands what Grade 2 pianists need to hear. This piece sits comfortably in their hands while delivering genuine melodic satisfaction, the kind that keeps students engaged between technical exercises and larger repertoire projects. His lyrical gift means students aren't just playing notes; they're learning to shape phrases and discover why musicality matters.

What to expect

Moonlit Paths evokes quiet reflection and gentle movement; the music unfolds like a walk through shadow and light. There's an unhurried quality that invites singers of the melody to breathe with it, discovering their own interpretation of its unfolding story.

Who it's for

Grade 2 pianists ready to move beyond strictly technical pieces into repertoire with musical substance. This works equally well for students in private lessons or group piano classes who need material that builds confidence alongside musicianship.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic contour with subtle dynamic shaping rather than sudden shifts; let students hear how the phrase naturally breathes
  • Work through any hand position changes slowly and separately, then combine with the other hand to ensure smooth transitions
  • Encourage even pedal use if the piece calls for it, experimenting with shorter pedal moments first so students develop control
  • Record a performance and listen together to identify where the melody sings most clearly and where it recedes

How to use it

Include this in a student recital alongside slightly easier warm-up pieces and more challenging repertoire, positioning it as proof of real progress. It also pairs nicely with beginner composition studies, giving students a model of accessible songwriting they can analyze and eventually emulate.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrase shaping and legato technique
  • Hand position management across the keyboard
  • Reading and interpreting dynamic markings
  • Pedal control and texture awareness
  • Musical interpretation and expressive singing tone
