About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell grew up in North Carolina without immediate access to a piano, practicing daily at his aunt and uncle's home until his parents could afford an instrument of their own. He began composing in high school, drawing inspiration from literature studied in English class and writing pieces for the high school choir's radio broadcasts. After earning his degree from East Carolina University, he taught in a small town and resumed composing, eventually catching the attention of Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s, whose encouragement led him to approach publishers.

Hartsell's gift for melody and his understanding of what motivates student pianists has resulted in more than 60 published collections and solos since his debut with Alfred in 1990. Today he remains active in Charlotte, North Carolina, working as a teacher, accompanist, clinician, adjudicator, and church organist-conductor. His compositions are known for their lyrical warmth and their ability to connect with musicians at every level.
