About the Arranger: Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin brings decades of experience as both a choral conductor and arranger, having led performances at some of North America's most prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Ryman Auditorium. His work has taken him across the globe, from the Sydney Opera House to London's Royal Festival Hall, establishing him as a respected voice in American choral music. As Director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press, Gilpin has shaped the landscape of accessible choral repertoire for student singers.
Beyond the concert hall, Gilpin has extended his creative reach into film scoring and recently ventured into professional organizing and financial coaching. An ASCAP award winner and active member of ACDA and NAfME, he continues to compose and arrange while remaining deeply invested in choral education and community music-making.
Why we love this
Gilpin knows how to build energy in a piece that young singers can execute successfully. The partner-song concept pairs familiar holiday texts with a well-loved Russian melody, giving students both the comfort of recognizable material and the satisfaction of singing something fresh. That accelerando into the finale rewards rehearsal preparation and gives your winter concert a moment that audiences won't forget.
What to expect
There's an infectious lightness here that comes from the marriage of a folk melody with cherished holiday traditions. The piece moves with a buoyant charm, and that push toward the accelerated finish creates genuine momentum and joy that performers and listeners alike can feel building through the arrangement.
Who it's for
This piece works beautifully for middle school and early high school choirs seeking accessible holiday repertoire with genuine musical substance. It's ideal for groups with developing musicianship who benefit from the scaffolding that familiar melodies and texts provide.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the approach to each text independently before blending them. Spend rehearsal time on the 'Deck the Hall' section and 'Jingle Bells' section separately so singers understand the character and rhythm of each before adding the simultaneous parts.
- Control the accelerando strategically. Mark a clear tempo map in your score so the tempo shift feels intentional rather than chaotic; rehearse the transition with a metronome to lock the timing across both parts.
- Balance the two melodic lines so neither dominates. In a partner-song arrangement, both parts carry equal musical weight; encourage singers to listen across the choir and adjust blend as needed.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to establish harmonic reference during early rehearsals, then gradually move toward unaccompanied singing to build independence in your ensemble.
How to use it
Program this as a mid-concert piece in your winter concert to capitalize on its familiarity without sacrificing musical credibility. It pairs well alongside more formal holiday fare and gives your audience a moment of accessibility that can reset attention before moving into heavier choral works.
