Dr. Russell L. Robinson spent decades as Emeritus Professor of Music Education at the University of Florida, building an international reputation through hundreds of presentations, clinics, and conducting appearances across six continents. His work has taken him to prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, while his leadership roles at the state and national level (including FMEA President and NAfME Choral Adviser) shaped choral music education policy and practice.

His 2016 induction into the Florida Music Educators Association Hall of Fame recognized a career devoted to advancing the craft and vision of school choral programs.

Why we love this

Robinson demonstrates real classroom teaching in this DVD, not just theory or polished performances. Watching him work with an actual middle school choir shows you exactly how to diagnose and fix the specific problems your singers face: breath support, blend, diction, and ensemble awareness. You get both the technical insight and the practical orchestration of a director who understands adolescent singers.

What to expect

The DVD captures the particular challenge and reward of middle school choral work: channeling youthful energy, enthusiasm, and developing vocal maturity into unified, intentional music-making. You see singers transform from scattered to focused as Robinson applies targeted techniques.

Who it's for

Middle school and junior high choral directors looking for concrete, classroom-tested techniques will find immediate value here. Music education students preparing to teach young singers also benefit from watching an experienced director diagnose problems and adjust in real time.

How to get the most out of it

  • Channel your singers' natural physical energy into purposeful movement and gesture that supports the musical line rather than distracting from it.
  • Build blend and intonation by establishing clear vowel shapes early; Robinson's classroom demonstrations show this work in real time with real adjustment and feedback.
  • Use sectional rehearsal strategies that address the specific needs of changing and developing voices without singling out individuals.
  • Establish clear diction protocols that middle school singers can replicate consistently; consonant placement and vowel consistency are foundational.

How to use it

Use this as a professional development resource during a staff meeting or sectional planning session with your assistant directors. Revisit specific clips when you encounter a particular rehearsal challenge; the classroom setting makes the demonstrations directly applicable to your own students.

Skills your students will build

  • Breath control and support appropriate for developing singers
  • Vowel consistency and clarity across ranges
  • Ensemble listening and blend in choir formation
  • Sustained focus and intentional musicality in group settings
  • Diction precision in ensemble singing
