About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumni recipient. Before establishing himself as a prolific composer, he spent eight years in music publishing administration and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America. His catalog now includes more than 800 choral works performed regularly across the English-speaking world, and he is a writer member of ASCAP with multiple Special Award recognitions.

Beyond composition, Althouse has shaped music education through numerous collaborative projects and instructional resources. He co-authored children's musicals with his wife Sally K. Albrecht, compiled influential vocal solo collections, and wrote the widely adopted Complete Choral Warm-up Book alongside Accent on Composers. His educational materials—including Ready to Read Music, Sixty Music Quizzes, and One-Page Composer Bios—bring music fundamentals into classrooms nationwide. He contributed to I Hear America Singing, a choral work performed at President Obama's inauguration by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs.

Why we love this

Althouse crafts this bilingual holiday arrangement with the kind of musical accessibility and genuine warmth that makes it genuinely singable by a wide range of choirs. The Latin percussion and rhythmic drive give standard Christmas programming a refreshing energy without demanding technical virtuosity, so your ensemble stays focused on enjoying the performance rather than wrestling with the notation.

What to expect

The piece radiates infectious joy and cultural warmth. Latin rhythms and percussion create forward momentum, while the familiar melody grounds the arrangement in immediate recognition, blending accessibility with genuine stylistic flavor.

Who it's for

This arrangement welcomes choirs looking to expand their Christmas offerings beyond traditional carols. It works equally well for groups seeking multicultural repertoire, holiday concert variety, or a piece that genuinely engages singers who tire of standard secular Christmas fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish a steady Latin groove from rehearsal one. A clear pulse in the accompaniment track anchors the ensemble, especially if your singers are less accustomed to syncopated rhythms.
  • Shape the bilingual text expressively. Even if the pronunciation feels unfamiliar at first, commit to the vowels and rhythm; the Latin flavor emerges when singers trust the style rather than overthink it.
  • Balance vocal blend against the recorded accompaniment's energy. The accompaniment drives forward, so the choir must stay confident and avoid dropping back into slower tempos out of habit.

How to use it

Use this as a closing or second-to-last selection on a holiday concert to send the audience out energized. It pairs effectively with more reflective Christmas pieces earlier in the program, offering contrast and a celebratory send-off that feels contemporary without losing the season's spirit.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing with Latin rhythmic precision (syncopation and clave patterns)
  • Bilingual text interpretation and pronunciation (Spanish and English)
  • Ensemble balance with rhythmically driving accompaniment
  • Multicultural musical style awareness and authentic performance approach
