About the Composer: Cindy Berry

Cindy Berry

Cindy Berry is a Houston native who studied at Houston Baptist University and has built a substantial catalog of sacred choral works, children's musicals, and piano collections. Her work as a clinician takes her across the country leading composer weekends and workshops, and she has earned multiple ASCAP Special Awards throughout her career.

Berry serves her faith community actively: she directs the children's choir and plays keyboard at First Baptist Church in Killeen, Texas, where her husband Bruce serves as Minister of Music. For Berry, composing is fundamentally an act of worship, and that spiritual intention shapes everything she writes.

Why we love this

Berry's gift for crafting accessible yet musically satisfying material for young singers shines here. The text connects directly to liturgical purpose, and the two-part writing allows singers to experience harmonic independence without overwhelming early choir members. You get music that works immediately in rehearsal and feels substantive in performance.

What to expect

This piece carries quiet reverence and confidence without becoming ponderous. The harmonic language is warm and approachable, with Berry's text setting creating natural musical phrases that feel logical to sing. There's both strength and tenderness in the character.

Who it's for

Elementary through middle school choirs, particularly those serving in church or faith community settings. The two-part voicing makes this accessible to younger or developing ensembles while remaining musically engaging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two parts carefully during sectionals; this is an ideal moment to isolate blend and to help each singer recognize their individual line's contour.
  • Let the text breathe. Sacred repertoire benefits from clean diction and purposeful phrasing, so invest rehearsal time in pronunciation and breath placement early.
  • Lean into the lyrics for interpretation cues. Berry's text setting guides singers naturally toward the emotional weight of the message.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a shorter concert piece that doesn't demand substantial rehearsal time but fills a meaningful slot on a sacred or concert program. It pairs well with other contemporary worship repertoire and serves equally well in a liturgical setting during a children's or family service.

Skills your students will build
