More about this title

About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober holds degrees in music education from the University of Illinois and piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Her training under accomplished pianists Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich, combined with mentorship in music education and jazz, shaped her approach to writing music that genuinely connects with students.

Bober has spent over two decades teaching piano privately and in public schools, with additional experience at the university level. She remains active as a church pianist and director, and her reputation as both a clinician and composer has made her a regular presence at piano teacher conventions and workshops throughout North America. She lives in Minnesota with her family.

Why we love this

Bober's gift is creating pieces that feel rewarding without resorting to empty technical showiness. Each selection in this collection represents genuine musical content drawn from her extensive teaching experience, so you know every piece will land meaningfully with your students. The stylistic range ensures that students maintain engagement across the full collection rather than pushing through filler.

What to expect

An eclectic mix that moves fluidly between contemporary and classical-inspired soundscapes. The collection breathes, offering contemplative moments alongside passages with rhythmic vitality and playful character.

Who it's for

Late-intermediate pianists ready for pieces with real musical personality and stylistic diversity. Teachers seeking curated collections that eliminate the guesswork of programming mixed-level repertoire and give students immediate access to appealing material.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map the harmonic changes before diving into tempo work; these pieces often contain unexpected progressions that benefit from solid harmonic grounding.
  • Listen carefully to the printed dynamics and articulation markings. Bober's details shape the character as much as the melodic line itself.
  • Record yourself playing through sections at a conversational tempo first, then gradually increase speed only after muscle memory is genuinely solid.

How to use it

Use individual pieces as spring or fall recital selections, or work through several across a semester to expose students to the breadth of Bober's compositional voice. The 44-page collection is substantial enough to anchor a student's solo practice repertoire for an entire year.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing varied articulation patterns (legato, staccato, mixed)
  • Interpreting stylistic context from score markings and harmonic language
  • Building independence between hands across changing textures
  • Managing rubato and tempo flexibility within a stable pulse
  • Sustaining musical narrative across intermediate-length forms
