About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear at age four in northwestern Pennsylvania and went on to study formally at the Warren Conservatory of Music. She earned her B.S. in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia and later taught vocal music in upstate New York while instructing for the international Yamaha Music School.

A visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson in Nashville sparked a career transition into piano arrangement work. Since then, Tornquist has arranged more than four hundred solo piano collections, earning recognition among church pianists and students for her craftsmanship, playability, and sensitivity to worship contexts across traditional, blended, and contemporary settings. Her harmonic and rhythmic choices consistently honor familiar melodies while offering them fresh musical possibilities. An Alfred author since 2010, she continues to develop resources designed for pianists across all proficiency levels.

Why we love this

This collection answers a real need in blended worship settings by pairing beloved hymns with contemporary praise songs in thoughtful medleys that feel cohesive rather than patchworked. Tornquist's harmonic language respects the integrity of each tune while creating genuine musical conversation between old and new. Having all 22 medleys in one comb-bound volume, complete with performance times, makes it the go-to resource for church pianists navigating Sunday services that span centuries of congregational song.

What to expect

These arrangements create a musical bridge between two worship worlds. A hymn's grounded harmonic foundation gradually opens into the brighter, rhythmically contemporary feel of a praise song, with each medley flowing as a natural conversation rather than a medley that simply stacks tunes. The result is accessible yet sophisticated, familiar yet refreshed.

Who it's for

Church pianists who lead blended worship services and need reliable, singable arrangements that honor both congregational hymn traditions and contemporary praise repertoire. Students preparing for worship leadership roles or pianists building their sacred performance library will find these medleys immediately useful and musically rewarding.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the performance time notations to plan your service flow; these timings account for natural phrase breathing, so you can trust them for scheduling.
  • Pay attention to how Tornquist transitions between the hymn tune and the contemporary song within each medley; the bridge passages are designed to feel inevitable rather than abrupt, so let them breathe.
  • Lean into the harmonic color changes, especially in passages where contemporary voicings meet traditional melodies; this contrast is the heart of what makes blended worship arrangements distinctive.
  • Practice the rhythmic settings separately from the melodies; the accompaniment patterns sometimes shift style mid-medley to reflect the character change between hymn and praise song.

How to use it

Use individual medleys as interludes during services or as complete musical statements in worship sets designed to reflect a congregation's full musical heritage. The comb binding makes it easy to program specific medleys throughout the year without carrying unnecessary material, and the collection's breadth ensures you have options for virtually any liturgical season or worship theme.

Skills your students will build

  • Playing medleys that transition smoothly between two distinct musical styles
  • Interpreting harmonic voicings that blend traditional hymn language with contemporary vocabulary
  • Managing rhythmic pattern shifts between hymn and praise song idioms
  • Sight-reading early advanced contemporary Christian and sacred piano arrangements
  • Developing improvisation and ornamentation skills suited to worship accompaniment
