Description

Materie by Sebastian Fagerlund is an 8-minute work for solo violin. It was composed as a compulsory piece for the Kuopio 2020 Violin Competition (Finland). "Throughout the composition process I was fascinated by the idea that the musical material of the piece demands both virtuosity and rhythmic control from the player, but at the same time offers the possibility to express subtlety and depth of sound." (Sebastian Fagerlund)

Materie was premiered at the Kuopio Violin Competition 2020.

The score of the work (EP 14435) is available for sale.

More about this title

About the Composer: Sebastian Fagerlund

Sebastian Fagerlund is a Finnish composer whose works balance technical rigor with expressive depth. His compositions often explore the relationship between material constraint and interpretive freedom, asking performers to engage simultaneously with precision and nuance.

Why we love this

Fagerlund wrote this work specifically for competition, which means every bar serves a pedagogical and artistic purpose. The piece refuses to separate virtuosity from musicianship; it demands both equally, making it ideal for advanced students ready to prove they can play difficult passages with intention rather than just speed.

What to expect

Materie balances urgency with introspection. The writing moves between passages that test your velocity and control and moments of genuine quietness, creating a work that feels both demanding and intimate. You emerge from it having proven something about your craft while also having said something about sound itself.

Who it's for

Advanced violinists preparing for competitions, auditions, or recitals who want contemporary repertoire that respects both their technical ability and their musicality. This 8-minute solo demands sustained focus and expressive commitment from players at the college level and beyond.

How to get the most out of it

  • Identify the rhythmic grid beneath the virtuosic passages. Once you locate it, the rapid figures become navigable landmarks rather than obstacle courses.
  • Balance the technical demands with your sound palette. The composition invites you to explore tonal colors even while executing complex fingerwork.
  • Consider the silences and slower sections as structural equals to the virtuosic material. They are not breaks from the work; they are the work.

How to use it

Program this as a contemporary centerpiece in a recital, paired with Baroque and Romantic repertoire to demonstrate range across periods and styles. Its 8-minute duration and solo instrumentation make it an excellent standalone work or the opening piece of a varied program.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic control and precision under sustained technical demands
  • Tonal variety and dynamic nuance within virtuosic passages
  • Sustained focus and musical coherence over an extended solo work
  • Interpretation of contemporary notation and compositional language
  • Balance between technical display and expressive depth
