Description
This set of short pieces depicts events that occur annually at fairs all across North America. Ferris wheels, cotton candy, and a fanfare to open the fair are all included. Unique to this short suite is Old McDonald's Barn, a popular viewing event with children found at the Markham Fair. In this movement, animal noises are emulated within the group. This work is not too difficult and is very interesting and fun for all players. Every section in the band is featured and gets a chance to perform some melodic material.

More about this title

About the Composer: David Marlatt

David Marlatt brings a composer's ear for accessibility without sacrificing musical substance. His catalog spans educational and professional ensembles, with particular strength in writing that engages every section of the band and keeps young musicians invested in the material.

Why we love this

Marlatt writes with a keen eye for what band students actually enjoy playing. Every section gets real melodic material to carry, which means your clarinets, saxophones, brass, and percussion all leave rehearsal feeling heard. The fair-themed narrative gives younger bands a concrete musical story to tell without requiring virtuosic technique.

What to expect

A cheerful musical carnival where every player gets a moment in the spotlight. The suite captures the sensory excitement of a fair: spinning rides, sweet treats, barnyard charm, and the energy of celebration. Student musicians experience genuine joy in playing parts that matter to the overall sound.

Who it's for

Grade 2 concert bands looking for accessible, engaging repertoire that builds section confidence through shared melodic responsibility. Programs with younger or developing ensembles benefit from music that prioritizes inclusion and fun without sacrificing musical growth.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the animal sound effects in Old McDonald's Barn so they enhance rather than overwhelm the melodic line. Rehearse which sections provide which sounds and establish clear cues.
  • Keep the fanfare opening bright and energetic with clean articulation across the full band; this sets the celebratory tone for the entire suite.
  • Let each movement breathe as its own character. The contrast between the Ferris wheel's gentler sections and the cotton candy section's energy will come through more vividly if you allow tempo and dynamics to reset between pieces.

How to use it

This suite works beautifully on a family concert or spring pops program where younger audiences connect immediately with the fair imagery. Consider pairing it with other program music at the Grade 2 level to showcase your band's ability to tell stories through sound.

Skills your students will build

  • balanced ensemble sound across all sections
  • articulation clarity in fanfare-style passages
  • section confidence through prominent melodic writing
  • ensemble cohesion and listening to other parts
  • tone production across a range of registers
